Helen Yates – Hypno Birthing
What is HypnoBirthing?
HypnoBirthing is a method of antenatal education in which you learn to use breathing, relaxation and self-hypnosis to fully prepare you for a joyful, calm and safe birth. HypnoBirthing helps you to get rid of any fears that you have about birth, and re-establishes the knowledge that birth is a normal, natural and physiological process that a woman’s body is perfectly designed for.
Helen is a very experienced midwife, having completed her training in 1990. She has worked in all areas of midwifery including ante natal, post natal and delivery suite. She currently works locally as a community midwife. She began teaching the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing in 2007 and has taught over 100 couples in Herts, Beds, Bucks and in Central London, both in groups and one to one settings.
She says “All of the couples I have taught have had very fulfilling birth experiences using the HypnoBirthing techniques. The course fully prepares women to use their own instincts when birthing .This is a really powerful tool for couples to use to help them have a positive and natural birth experience. No mean feat in this era of medicalisation of birth and when birth is often portrayed in a negative way by the media”
“The feeling after was amazing, I felt very proud of myself…. For me the whole experience was much better and I felt like my body was less damaged this time and was up and more mobile a few hours later.” Heather, Hemel Hempstead.
For the last 20-30 years in the UK, most women have given birth to their babies in large maternity units. Caesarean section is common place, epidurals readily available and all too often it is the negative birth stories that we hear.
HypnoBirthing reminds us that birth is normal. The birth of a baby is a life changing experience for both of the parents-to-be and most prospective parents like to be as well prepared as possible for what lies ahead. HypnoBirthing gives you all the skills you need to ensure that you will be fully empowered to achieve the best possible birth for you and your baby.
HypnoBirthing is widely accepted and endorsed by midwives for both hospital and home births.
“Classes brilliant, they stopped me from panicking. In fact I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say that before I started the classes I was terrified of giving birth. A couple of classes in and lots of practice later with the CD and I was almost looking forward to it!! I was so glad we had chosen to take the classes and – it was just such a relief to stop worrying.” Catherine, Herts.
How will HypnoBirthing Help?
Through HypnoBirthing you will develop a very positive view of pregnancy and birth.
You will learn how to deeply relax and understand why this is so important for labour.
You will learn how your body works when you are in labour and how being relaxed enhances your body’s performance as well as how and why being fearful works against it.
You will learn breathing techniques that will prevent you from becoming exhausted and that will help you to stay focussed when you are in labour.
Any fears that you have will diminish and your confidence will grow as you learn to trust your body’s ability to give birth to your baby.
People will notice how relaxed you are.
“In comparison to the last time when I felt like I had been put through a meat grinder, this time I actually told people the next day that I almost felt like I hadn’t had a baby. Both physically and emotionally I could not be
better and this birth has given me a hugely positive and empowering memory. I will be thoroughly recommending Hypnobirthing to anyone who will listen. Although I was hoping generally for an easier time with this birth than the last, I could not have imagined that it would go so well and I put a lot of credit to Hypnobirthing in both coping techniques and general preparation for the birth.” Becky, Berkhamsted.
A bit about Hypnosis
Some people are afraid of hypnosis, and others believe that they cannot ‘be hypnotised’.
However, we all go in and out of hypnosis several times during the day without realizing it. Think of the times when you get to where you are going but you can’t remember the drive – that’s hypnosis!
Hypnosis is simply a tool used to help you to reach a state of deep relaxation so that you can become completely focussed or ‘in the zone’ in order to achieve a desired goal. Many athletes use visualisation techniques similar to the ones you will learn in HypnoBirthing as part of their training. The goal in the case of birthing is a natural, drug-free, and relaxed birth experience for you, your baby and your birth partner.
I run free monthly information sessions at Carmenta for couples who are considering doing a HypnoBirthing course. Group classes run over four Friday evenings at 7.30pm and the cost is £275 per couple including all course material. Private classes by arrangement cost £375 and will usually be held in your home.
